Equitix has announced its investment in Eskilstuna Biogas AB (EBAB), a greenfield biogas plant in Sweden.
Equitix today announce their investment into the greenfield Eskilstuna Biogas AB (“EBAB”), a bio waste plant in Sweden supported by local partners and local farmers.
The Eskilstuna Biogas project is a 70 GWh biogas plant located just outside of the city of Eskilstuna. The project has the capacity for processing up to 150,000 tons per year of locally sourced agricultural waste and food waste to produce up to 5,400 tons per year of liquefied biogas (“LBG”). The plant will be one of the largest of its kind in the Nordic region and will supply local municipality services and Destination Gotland with renewable LBG.
Construction of this greenfield project is due to begin imminently on the plant, which will produce LBG, a renewable energy source from agricultural and food waste.
Project partners include; Eskilstuna Energi & Miljö, Klimatklivet, Rederiaktiebolaget Gotland AB (“Gotlandsbolaget”), Andion CH4 Renewables and multiple local Eskilstuna farmers.
The feedstock required to feed the plant has been secured from numerous local farmers who are also co-owners of the project and from Eskilstuna Energi & Miljö (“EEM”). The offtake volumes have been secured to long-term supply contracts with the local municipality EEM, and through Destination Gotland, a subsidiary of the equity investor Gotlandsbolaget. The project will also have a LBG public filling station facility and is expected to start producing LBG in the second half of 2026.
The project has achieved all permits and fulfils the national, regional and municipal environmental goals of contributing to a circular economy. Enabling works on the site began in August 2024 and civil works are about to commence in Q1. The digestate will be sold as high quality biofertilizer back to the farmers.
The project is constructed and partly financed by Andion CH4 Renewables (“Andion”), a global leader in delivering proven and comprehensive waste-to-energy solutions. Investment partners Gotlandsbolaget, a listed, regional shipping company and Equitix, a leading investor, developer and fund manager of critical infrastructure, are supported by a climate grant through the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the Climate Leap initiative (“Klimatklivet”) whose main aim is to provide the investment support that makes it possible to invest in fossil-free future technology and green transition.
The Environmental Protection Agency has been commissioned, along with other central government agencies and the county administrative boards to support local climate investments through the EU Next Generation fund to reduce climate-harming emissions. The Climate Leap initiative is co-financed by the EU’s recovery fund, Next Generation EU (NGEU).
Kaj Wågdahl, Chairman of Eskilstuna Biogas AB said:
“We are very excited to finally start the construction of the Eskilstuna biogas plant with a distinguished group of strategic investors and valuable municipality and local farming partners. We are also looking forward to contributing to a 10% CO2 reduction in the region and lead the way for other necessary green initiatives in the years to come in the region.”
Equitix CIO, Achal Bhuwania added;
“As an experienced greenfield investor with around 70 projects in our portfolio of 350+ assets, we’re delighted to be partnering with Eskilstuna Biogas and partners on this important renewable energy project. The Nordics is a region of growing significance for Equitix where we’ve been investing since 2020, with seven investments across multiple sub-sectors and an enterprise value of over c. €1bn. We’re committed to growing our presence here to support both local communities and the race to NetZero, delivering clean, reliable energy for all”.
Christer Martin-Löf, Managing Director of Andion Nordic said:
“We are very pleased to partner with Eskilstuna Biogas as an investor, as well as the core technology provider and operator of the Eskilstuna project and sees this as the first of many long-term strategic investments in the Nordic region for Andion”.
Anders Boman, Head of Growth of Gotlandsbolaget added;
“The investment in the biogas plant is strategically important for Gotlandsbolaget. We all know that the transition in society and the maritime industry is essential, and through this investment, we are further contributing to that development. To reduce the carbon emissions from our ships, we need access to increased volumes of renewable fuels, which we will now achieve. The construction of the biogas plant in Eskilstuna is therefore significant both for society at large and for the maritime industry.”
